Sigma Unveils All-Metal 20mm f/2 DG DN for Sony E and Leica L Mounts

Sigma announced the 20mm f/2 DG DN Lens, the seventh and largest Sigma optics in its all-metal I Series compact primes. This lens will be available in both Leica L-Mount (Sony E-Mount) and Sony E-Mount (Leica L-Mount).

The I series includes the 20mm lens, along with the 35mm, 24mm and 64mm lenses that all share an f/2 wide-open aperture. The 20mm f/2, despite its wider aperture and wider field-of-view, is nearly the same size as the 24mm f/2 DG DN lenses. It is made from all-metal and features a signature I Series metal cap.

The complete line of I Series lenses now includes the 20mm, 24mm, 24mm, 24mm, f/3.5 and 35mm F/2.

A premium compact prime lens

Sigma claims that the 20mm f/2 DG DN full-frame compatible lens combines outstanding optical performance with a compactness that’s suited for smaller, lighter mirrorless cameras. Sigma claims that smartphone photography has made photographers more selective. This means that a lens’s ability to take great photos isn’t the only thing that matters. Sigma has made its I Series lenses as comfortable to use for photography as well as great at taking photos.

The 20mm f/2 is made up of 13 elements, which are divided into 11 groups. These include three aspherical elements, one each of an FLD or SLD element. Sigma claims that the two latter elements are used to suppress optical aberrations. This results in sharp, clear images from corner-to-corner.

Sigma specialized in manufacturing sagittal flare suppression. It claims that this is difficult to correct in post processing. The company claims that its lens reproduces very bright points of light accurately, which is important for night sky photography.

The lens features a 94.5 degree angle of view, a minimum focus distance of 8.7 inches and a maximum magnification ratio (:6.7). The lens has a nine-bladed diaphragm, and a 62mm front thread for filter threads.

Sigma claims the new prime lens features an inner focusing system compatible with high speed autofocus modes. It is also powered by a step motor. The metal lens cap and a metal hood are paired with it. It also features a brass bayonet mount that is durable and high-precision.
